While there isn’t just one thing that makes these cars so extraordinary, the most popular piece of trivia regarding the ZL1 is that only two of this car model were ever manufactured.  The car was designed for a very important individual at GM, a huge error was made and the car found its way onto the assembly line.  Two of these models were made before production stopped.

If you’ve ever heard the phrase, “muscle car”, the ZL1 could be the true definition of the term.  The speed and force of the 600 horsepower engine made completely out of aluminum with a 437 cubic inch design is the car’s secret weapon.  The weight of the engine only adds about thirty extra pounds that any traditional small block would have had yet it provides the ZL1 with two times the amount of torque.

To make the ZL1 even more unique, the cars were not made in the same color.  One is yellow and the other one is white.  The yellow car was made as a roadster and the white car has a T-top design.  Both cars feature 4-speed transmissions.  The whereabouts of the white car isn’t publicly known, but the yellow car is said to have been confiscated as part of a drug raid in 1989.  A very lucky buyer was able to purchase the yellow ZL1 well below the car’s approximated value.

While the original intention behind the creation of the ZL1 is lost, anyone who has been lucky enough to come across either of these cars has been able to enjoy a rare and powerful piece of Chevrolet history.  The ZL1 has a well-deserved reputation and the beauty and power to preserve it.

The ZR1 corvette is so hot that the number of people who want the car outnumbers the cars available for purchase.  Consumers also need to know that not every Chevy dealer is going to be able to offer the highly sought after vehicle.  Each dealership has to have established a certain number of sales every year in order to qualify to sell the ZR1.  Dealers who have a history of moving over100 corvette vehicles off their lots during a year have a chance of offering the car.  If a dealership is small and doesn’t work with high-volume sales, they won’t even be considered to offer the ZR1 to customers.

Bill Mitchell is the mind behind the second generation corvette Sting Ray.  For starters, what is known today as “bucket seats” were known as cockpit style seats.  They were altered from the original design for a more comfortable ride.  The car was also the first hard-top coupe.  While a newer split rear window design was introduced with the originally produced cars, they were later replaced over visibility and safety concerns.  The exhaust was affixed to the side of the car for the first time as well and was later revised to the more traditional system.

Just like the previous corvettes, the Sting Ray was constructed with fiberglass panels mounted on a steel frame.  One of the highly attractive new additions to the car was the headlights were built to rise up and then descend back into the hood when not in use.  This streamlined headlight design provided a new level of efficiency for the driver.  For added efficiency, buyers could opt to get a car without a trunk lid.  The car still had trunk space but it could only be accessed by going behind the seats.

The Sting Ray had more new features to attract buyers including an attractive bump-out on the hood that was big enough for powerful big block engines.  Also, any convertible top on the corvette could be conveniently tucked away under a panel in the car when it wasn’t in use.  Three engine powers were also available to consumers where the actual horsepower could run from 250 to 435.  The second generation corvette Sting Ray was also the first for drivers to be able to enjoy four-wheel disc brakes and an independent suspension system.

There is something exceptionally special about the second generation corvette.  The second generation corvette or C2 has even been dubbed the initial “genuine sports car” in the United States.  In 1953, Chevrolet made their first car and their production went on to create six original generations of the car enthusiast’s favorite, the corvette.  Each generation has their own identifying designated title starting with C1 and ending with C6, which is the contemporary generation of the Chevy sports car.  The second generation corvette is considered by some to be the best ever produced by Chevrolet.

After the first generation of corvettes was started in 1953 and continued to be produced for nine years, the second generation corvette was made and in turn, made history.  Arguably the most popular corvette or all time, the Sting Ray coupe was produced.  Chevrolet’s duo of Bill Mitchell and Larry Shinoda was responsible for the car’s name and design.  While the Sting Ray wasn’t the only car the team was behind, it was by far the most successful one.

There are many factors behind why the second generation corvettes had such a huge following in the United States.  The first reason is that these cars offered citizens of the U.S. the opportunity to show their love for their country by driving a truly domestically-produced car.  The cars were also more powerful than anything else that car lovers had experienced before.  Each subsequent second generation corvette was more powerful than its predecessor.

What people today call “extras” in cars was an additional factor in the second generation corvette’s popularity.  This generation of vehicle provided riders with an independent rear suspension system in addition to more modern extras like air conditioning and AM/FM radio.  Driving and riding pleasure was a huge factor in the success of the second generation corvette.

Not all was perfect with all the models of second generation corvettes.  A rear window designed to be split in the rear was quickly replaced with a traditional window due to limited visibility.  Traditional brakes were no longer considered safe because of the car’s power, so four-wheel disc brakes were added to the cars in 1965.  Also, a uniquely designed side exhaust system was later changed in 1970.

The second generation corvettes are in a class by themselves.  If you were to ask car lovers about their favorite second generation corvette, you would most likely hear that the 1966 model is a consistent favorite while the 1967 second generation corvette is a close second.

Price is always a factor when making any kind of purchase, but it is especially important to know what you are able to spend when buying a used corvette.  While a unique “fixer upper” opportunity might seem like a great deal at first, it can sometimes cost far more than you ultimately have to spend.  If you find a car that needs some work, do as much research as you can to figure out what getting the car up and running will cost to get on the road.  Be sure to consider the cost of all important things you might need like parts and labor before making an offer.  It might be a better decision to find a car that is already ready for the road depending on your price limit.

When you’ve found a model you are interested in, assess the shape the vehicle is in just by looking around.  Rust is a huge indicator of potential troubles in the long run, especially if you find it anywhere underneath the car.  If you are seriously considering a particular used corvette, you will want to get down and crawl underneath the vehicle.  If there is any rust on the frame, you might have a support problem.  You will also want to take a look at the radiator.  If you see any rust on it, you should already start thinking about putting in a new one.  Even if the car you are considering has some rust, it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t buy it.  It just means that you should seriously calculate the kind of cash it is going to take to put it into the shape you want it in as well as the asking price.

Once you’ve finished looking with the undercarriage, it’s time to crawl out and inspect the car’s body.  You might not see any obvious signs of past damage or repairs, but you can take a look at the front bumper for signs of past work.  Sometimes when the front bumper is uneven or wavy where it meets the fiberglass, it is a pretty good indicator that the car has been involved some sort of accident.  Any past accidents can mean potential suspension problems in the future.

The time most car buyers wait for comes after you inspect the exterior of the vehicle.  It’s time to get behind the wheel and inspect the interior features as well as how the steering handles.  Check all of the internal features from the radio to the heat to make sure they work.  Once you get the car on the road, be sure to make note of the way the car both steers and sounds as you are driving.  Any odd noises like pops or screeching can mean that the differential gear arrangement has a problem.  You can mention any unusual noises to the seller to negotiate price if you want the car badly enough and are willing to work on what needs fixing.

Take your time when looking for and inspecting used corvettes.  You may not find what you are looking for right away, but the opportunity for the right vehicle will pop up eventually.  Wait for the right vehicle with the best price tag and you will find that your used corvette was worth your patience.
